In Syria, after 13 years of civil war, Syrian rebels seized control of Damascus, ending the repressive 50-year rule of the Assad family. Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia.

Here & Now security analyst Jim Walsh talks to host Anthony Brooks about what this sudden rebel victory means for Syria, for the broader region and for outside powers, like the United States and Russia. Walsh is a senior research associate at MIT’s security studies program.

This segment aired on December 9, 2024.
